2011 Elections SHOWDOWN Reports: Young Professionals Prepare Government and INEC for Technology Revolution
By SAMMYThe focus of the programme is for young Nigerians to match advocacy with action through a peaceful revolutionary platform and the pivotal role of RISE is to inform and enlighten young people on their fundamental rights as major determinants of winners and losers in the electoral process while also demanding accountability from elected office holders at all levels of government.
BN will be bringing you periodic updates on topics discussed on the TV programme.
Last week, the participants Nwoye Osita and Busayo Akanro discussed the role of social media and technology as viable tools of change in electoral reform. The show was anchored by Chinedu Chidi.
Chinedu Chidi got the participants into discussion by asking how ready Nigerians are for the 2011 Elections using the Social Media?

Busayo Akanro, a “nation builder” estimated the percentage of ICT growth in Nigeria at about 60%. He emphasized that masses can produce content that has a positive impact on the media, these include videos which can be uploaded unto social networking platforms.
He also gave insight on how the internet can be a useful source of free information while enabling users to be in control of whatever information they wish to share. He added that the anonymity of the internet and some technology devices makes it easier to share information as no permission, licence or information bill is required to disseminate information.
Another guest Osita Nwoye, an Internet Consultant shared that, “There is no amount of what we do electronically for example on Blackberry of Facebook that can replace how it could be done in reality.”
He agreed to the fact that, the social networking platforms are going to be useful during the elections, because it will be used to monitor activities at the polls and to prevent electoral frauds He said “We will not leave it in their hands, we will tweet, facebook, send sms, and pictures to find out if there is electoral violence or not. Clips of video taken will be posted on youtube communicated across to the people. So that anyone that rigs would be disgraced on Facebook,Twitter and all the internet blogs. This is to ensure that people are carried along and not waiting for INEC.”
He noted that it is imperative to ensure that the technologies and gadgets put in place by INEC for the elections in used accordingly. He also lauded the INEC for the technology put in place for the just concluded voter registration in Nigeria.
Also on the show, Mayowa Owolabi, a Technology Development Professional stated that things are very different from what we used to have in the past as the use of social media has bridged the gap between people in government and the masses compared to what we used to have in the past.
He said there is a software newly invented that works with Blackberries and java enabled phones called REVODA . “It is a mobile app that allows voters to report election activities as independent election observers from their respective polling units across Nigeria. ReVoDa also allows EiE Nigeria Network to send relevant information about the electoral process to registered users in specific locations.
The app also provides a complete list of political parties and their acronyms. You can use this list for reference on party acronyms when inputing party results in the reporting section.”
The likelihood of Government sabotaging means of Communication during the Elections is being analyzed.
sita Nwoye explained that, if the government decided to sabotage means of communication, they will be at the receiving end of the action as well, because they will not be able to reach out to people on these platforms too.
In conclusion social media can be used to pass positive or negative information. In view of this it is therefore advised that, masses should know the authenticity of information passed on the internet and all media related devices.

World Premiere: Julius Agwu, Adaora Ukoh & 2Shotz star in “My Vote Fit Change Naija” – Watch It Now
Posted on Friday, March 4th, 2011 at 11:37 PMBy Sammy
As the 2011 Nigerian General Elections approach, various advocacy groups and non-profit organizations are taking action and encouraging eligible Nigerian to “make their voices heard” by voting during the elections. Voting numbers relative to the number of eligible Nigerians were unimpressive during the last general election in 2007, therefore it is important that we do not let this happen again!“My Vote Fit Change Naija” is a short film directed byAlex Mouth and produced by Kingsley Bangwell as part of a non-partisan citizen-led initiative by the Youngstars Foundation in partnership with the Julius Agwu Foundation for Youth (JAFFY). The project is funded byNational Democratic Institute (NDI) with support fromUSAID.The film is a simple yet stark reminder of the challenges and struggles that Nigerians face each day due to the lack of infrastructure and deep malaise of our public system including the health, education and power sectors. The film stars comedian Julius Agwu, actress Adaora Ukoh, musician 2Shotz and Yomi Onanuga. In the film, Julius plays the role of a young unemployed man, he graduated from university 4 years ago and has been unable to find a job. He comes home and finds his brother’s wife in distress – she is pregnant and has gone into labour; as he tries to get her help, they face various challenges that we are sure most people who have lived in Nigeria can relate to….You’ll have to watch the video to get the rest of the story. The film officially launched in Abuja on Thursday 3rd March 2011 at the Rockview Hotel in Abuja. After the launch, the cast and crew were hosted by the US Ambassador to Nigeria at the US Embassy House in Abuja. The ambassador and delegates encouraged everyone in attendance to vote then lauded the initiative and the film. 200 Nigerian youth were also present at the event and received free copies of the film DVD.The short film is available to view on YouTube, screenings will be held across the country between now and the elections in April, in addition, DVDs/VCDs will also be distributed for free. To promote the cause, the Youngsters Foundation and JAFFY have introduced the Best Use of Video Youth Challenge 2011. One voting advocate will win an all-expense paid trip to United Kingdom sponsored by Julius Agwu. To enter the contest, entrants will need to use the video to conduct a voting awareness activity in any part of Nigeria between March 5th and April 15th 2011. Visit the Youngsters Foundation website - www.youngstars-foundation.org for more details.
The message may seem “obvious” but it needs to be heard and reinforced.

EEK Magazine relaunches as a Weekly Glossy – Ohimai Atafo, Lisa Folawiyo, Frank Edoho & Genevieve Nnaji “cover” the new issues

In October 2006, we published a stunning photo spread featuring Funmi Iyanda – Click HERE to view. The spread was from SLEEK Magazine, a periodic lifestyle and fashion print publication.
For 2011, the magazine has reviewed its format and relaunched as a glossy weekly publication. Media professionals have often noted the gap in the Nigerian magazine market for a glossy weekly publication a la OK! Magazine, US Weekly, Heat etc…
The most recent issue of the magazine was released this week and features Who Wants to be a Millionaire Nigeria host, Frank Edoho on the cover. Other features in this issue include a review of M.I’s album and tons of recent event photos.

Shakomended donates kidney to spouse
At last Tomi, the 27-year-old wife of afro pop/highlife singer, Shakomended, has a cause to laugh again after undergoing a successful kidney transplant a fortnight ago at the St. Nicholas Hospital, Lagos with her husband as the live-donor.
The surgery was carried out by a team of expert nephrologists led by Dr. Shonibare, Consultant Surgeon/ Nephrologist and Dr. E. L. Bamgboye, Consultant Transplant Nephrologist.
The mother of one was earlier in February, 2010 diagnosed with end-stage chronic kidney disease at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, LUTH and required an estimated N6m for an urgent kidney transplant.
Deflated and unsure of how to raise the money that would keep his wife of three years alive, Shakomended whose real name is Lanre Fakeye, a fast rising singer who also works as business development manager at Premier Records Limited organised a Keep Tomi-Alive Concert on Sunday, May 17, 2010 at De-Blue Roof of the Lagos Television, Agidingbi, Ikeja.
Despite the support of his friends in the music and entertainment industry such as MC Basketmouth, MC Abbey, Koffi, Ras Kimono, Aju, Anny, Maye Hunter, Kaha, Mallam Spicy, Zdon Poparella, The Pulse, Justina, Frank De Nero, Spy Da Man, Onos, Chuddy K and a host of others, the show was not really a commercial success. But showing an amazing uncanny courage, the young man‘s faith did not flag.
Shine briefly returned to the young couple‘s life when Comrade Ayodele Adewale, chairman, Amuwo-Odofin Local Government Area, Lagos State, and Solid Rock Investment Limited presented Tomi with a cheque of N1m respectively; with friends, family and kind hearted Nigerians also donating their widows mite. These monies were used for dialysis which lasted a period of seven months.
A real life line however, came for Tomi when his Excellency, Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) the Executive Governor of Lagos State, through the Ministry of Health paid St. Nicholas hospital for the kidney transplantation surgery.
Speaking to a group of journalists who visited the couple after they were discharged from hospital, Tomi expressed sincere gratitude to everybody that showed concern to her and her family.
“I am indeed grateful to everybody that extended their love to me and my family. The experience has been a very challenging one over the last one year, but I thank God that I was able to come out alive a stronger and a better person” she said. Tomilayo is a Guidance and Counselling graduate of the University of Lagos and hails from Ikorodu, Lagos State.

BN Exclusive: Award-winning Broadway Sensation FELA! makes historic arrival in Lagos – April 20th to 25th 2011
Posted on Monday, February 28th, 2011 By SammyFELA!, the landmark Broadway musical, which won three Tony Awards (Broadway’s highest honor) including Best Choreography (Bill T. Jones), is coming to Lagos from April 20th to 25th. It will be performed at Eko Hotel’s New Expo Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria. This critically lauded musical will star its original Broadway cast with Sahr Ngaujahreprising his Tony-nominated role of Fela Kuti with music provided by the internationally renowned Antibalas as well as other members of the New York City Afro-beat community.
Concurrently with the Broadway production, FELA! opened and triumphed at London’s Royal National Theater for a three-month sold-out run. That production was nominated for three Olivier Awards, London theatre’s highest honor, including Best Musical, Best Actor (Sahr Ngaujah) and Best Choreography (Bill T. Jones). This Nigerian engagement will be the first since the closing of the Broadway and London productions and the NTLive performance which was broadcast to in 370 cinemas worldwide.
The aim of FELA! in Lagos is to unite and connect Africans in spirit and unity, to serve as a catalyst for cultural revival in Nigeria, and to celebrate Fela Kuti, for the contribution he has made to Nigeria and the world. FELA! depicts the true story of the legendary Nigerian musician Fela Kuti, whose soulful Afro beat rhythms ignited the spirit of empowerment and cultural awareness in a generation. It is a tale of courage, passion and love featuring Kuti’s captivating music and the visionary direction and choreography of Tony Award winner, Bill T. Jones. FELA! in Lagos is being produced by a Nigerian production company, Broken Shackles in conjunction with Lagos State Government.
Upon its Broadway opening Ben Brantley of The New York Times wrote, “There should be dancing in the streets. The hot (and seriously cool) energy that comes from the musical gospel preached by the title character of Fela! feels as if it could stretch easily to the borders of Manhattan and then across a river or two. There has never been anything on Broadway like this production.” The New York Post’s Elisabeth Vincentelli cheered, “There’s enough energy to short circuit Con Ed.” David Cote of Time Out New York, in giving it 5 stars (out of 5) raved, “Fela! is more than a musical; it’s an ecstatic phenomenon.” And Jennifer Farrar from the Associated Press exclaimed, “An exuberant celebration!”
The English critics were equally effusive after the London premiere of FELA! One critic, Baz Bamigboye of The Daily Mail, summed up the critical sentiment with his review saying FELA! is a “groundbreaking show that shook Broadway and London’s Royal National Theatre to the rafters. Getting Brits to get on their feet and ‘get loose’ as Bill T. Jones puts it, was a rare feat. FELA! pulled it off by sheer exuberance and theatrical showmanship. At the same time, FELA! explored the soul of an artist and the darkness of a government that tried to block what Fela’s beam exposed.”
In addition to rave reviews from critics, FELA! has also won numerous awards and received standing ovations from such personalities as Mick Jagger, Madonna, Bruce Springsteen, Spike Lee, Ben Okri, Janet Jackson, Denzel Washington, Professor Wole Soyinka, Robert De Niro, and Hugh Jackman. First lady Michelle Obama, former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and President Obama’s Head of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano are but three of the dignitaries who have embraced this show.
Bill T. Jones, director and choreographer of FELA!, was recently honored with the prestigious Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts award along with Sir Paul McCartney and Oprah Winfrey. The Kennedy Center Honors are awarded annually for exemplary lifetime achievement in the performing arts. FELA! also won two Astaire Awards for its cast and choreography.
FELA! on Broadway was conceived by Bill T. Jones, Jim Lewis and Stephen Hendel. Its producers include the entertainment legends Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter and Will & Jada Smith.
A spokeswoman for Broken Shackles suggests that “with a series of media partners and sponsorships, FELA! in Lagos will be the most talked about show in Nigeria for years to come. We have created sponsorship, branding and advertising opportunities for those who wish to be a part of this historic theatrical event.”

Asa’s “Bimpe”: A Narrative Lyrical Analysis
Posted on Thursday, February 24th, 2011 at 7:28 PMBy Gbenga AwomoduBimpe is an upbeat song, one of the numerous songs on the album that make you want to dance, shoulder-high, and snap your fingers on the street. A playful, yet serious number, it is an indirect warning to a sister-in-law who meddles just too much in the dealings of her elder brother’s wife’s business. It brings to the fore, the intricacies and dynamics of the role played by in-laws in the life of a young wife in the Yoruba culture. Also highlighted is the complexity of the human nature; how people seem to be overtly interested in what you do with what they give you, whether as a loan or as a gift. Perhaps a loan warrants some ‘questioning’, but what if it were a gift? Here goes:
Bimpe n ba mi wi (Bimpe’s scolding me)
O f’owo si’nu business mi (she contributed money to my business)
Emi ire ko l’egbe/ o kan s’aju mi bimo ni (we’re not mates, you only gave birth before me)
Mo gbo n’pe on mo mi loju (I hear you eye me with disdain)
O l’anu gboa ni’pa business mi (You talk recklessly about my business)
Oro emi ire ko l’eni (Our quarrel’s not for today)
Egbon re n fe mi ni (It’s just because your brother’s my husband)
O f’owo si’nu business mi (she contributed money to my business)
Emi ire ko l’egbe/ o kan s’aju mi bimo ni (we’re not mates, you only gave birth before me)
Mo gbo n’pe on mo mi loju (I hear you eye me with disdain)
O l’anu gboa ni’pa business mi (You talk recklessly about my business)
Oro emi ire ko l’eni (Our quarrel’s not for today)
Egbon re n fe mi ni (It’s just because your brother’s my husband)
The narrator is presumably a young wife who suddenly needs financial help in sorting out her (petty) business. She receives money from her sister-in-law, only to be subjected to embarrassment from the ‘investor’. The sister-in-law, her husband’s younger sibling, begins to meddle in the young wife’s business affairs. Young Wife complains, but in the Yoruba culture, you ought to respect your siblings-in-law and refer to them like they were much older than you, even if you are a decade older. It is not clear whether the financial support was meant to be a ‘loan’ to be returned later, or a gift to support an in-law. Young Wife gets wind that Bimpe’s talking recklessly about her business, but she does not confront the suspect openly. The reason? She’s married to Bimpe’s brother!
Egbon re t’on fe mi lowo ni o (it’s your brother who’s currently married to me)
Mo ti ya fun ooo/ egbon re, egbon re ha! (I respect him – your brother; your brother ha!)
E ba mi so fun baby yen/ fun baby yen (Help me tell that babe, that babe)
T’o wole yen (that just entered the room)
E ba n kilo fun/ e kilo fun, yeah (Help me warn her, warn her…)
E ba mi so fun sisi yen (Help me tell that lady)
fun sisi yen to kun atike (that lady who has painted her face with talcum)
E ba n kilo fun/ e kilo fun, yeah (Help me warn her/ warn her, yeah)
Soft electric piano sound rises to underscore the feeling of endearment and sentiment as Young Wife recalls that she’s is married to Bimpe’s elder brother. But the bitterness continues to grow as the narrator refers to her ‘tormentor’ in the ‘third person’ – a rather distant and somewhat disregarding way to address your relatives. She taps into the power of description to emphasize some of Bimpe’s idiosyncrasies, like ‘plastering’ her face with talcum. In fact, this hints, albeit in a subtle way, that Bimpe is more-or-less lacking in education, exposure, fashion and lifestyle.
Bimpe ri mi fin (Bimpe is disrespecting me)
O wu wa omo lai si imoye (she behaved without understanding)
Mo ronu p’iwa da / omo inu mi l’on ba mi wi (I repent, ‘cos it’s someone much younger that’s chiding me)
Ile ana more l’Oyo/ won kunkun je m sinmi… (When I even visited my in-laws in Oyo State, they never even let me rest)
Ire o l’aponle/ o de fe ki eyan fe e sile (You’re not worth the respect, and you want someone to marry you into his home?)
She ups the ante here, still fussing over Bimpe’s disrespect, insisting that the accused lacks understanding. She tries to overlook the offense because she deems herself much older, but still recounts how her in-laws did not let her rest but torment her the last time she visited them in their home town in Oyo State. “(Bimpe), you are not worthy of respect and lack dignity, but you want some man to marry you into his home?” Perhaps Bimpe is even a single mother, estranged from her husband… Asa sings the chorus all over again and gives in to a synthesized interlude which helps dissipate some pent-up anger. The music is loud and defiant, making an angry statement. Then she runs through the final round of lamentation with the soothing electric piano (EP) sound leading her in…
Egbon re ton fe mi lowo ni o (it’s your brother who’s marrying me)
Mo ti ya fun ooo/ egbon re, egbon re ha! (I respect him, your brother, your brother ew!)
E ba mi so fun baby yen/ fun baby yen/ t’o wole yen (Help me tell that babe, that babe that just entered)
E ba n kilo fun/ e kilo fun, yeah… (Help me warn her, warn her…)
E ba mi so fun baby yen/ to gb’omo pon (Help me tell that lady with a baby straddled to her back)
T’o kun atike/ e ba n kilo fun/ e soro fun, yeah (talcum on her face, help me warn her, tell her!)
E bami so fun baby yen ko fo s’oke/ k’o fi mi’le (Help me tell that lady to jump up, and let me be)
Tio ba wo k’o la’ri mo’le (If she doesn’t like, she should split her own head on the floor)
E ba mi kilo fun/ ekilo fun (Help me warn her, warn her!)
E ba mi so fun baby yen k’o fo s’oke (Help me tell that lady to jump up)
K’o fi mi’le, k’o rin lo Offa (She should leave me alone, and trek to Offa –an ancient town in Kwara State)
E ba n ki’lo fun, e s’oro fun (Help me warn her, talk to her!)

K’o fi mi’le, k’o rin lo Offa (She should leave me alone, and trek to Offa –an ancient town in Kwara State)
E ba n ki’lo fun, e s’oro fun (Help me warn her, talk to her!)
Young Wife’s infuriation makes her say a lot more bitter things as she ends up asking Bimpe to take a long walk all the way to Offa town. Asa took me in on this one too, and kudos as she ends this energetic rendition by lacing the synthesizer with Young Wife’s anger. Bimpe, where are you!!!!!!!!!!!??????

Obi Emelonye’s “Mirror Boy” starring Genevieve Nnaji & Osita Iheme premieres at the Empire Leicester Square London on the 24th of February 2011
Posted on Monday, February 21st, 2011 at 8:05 AMBy SAMMYOn Thursday 24th February 2011, Empire Leicester Square in London will play host to a truly unique occasion that is set to become known as the biggest premiere of an African film held in the UK. This international gala occasion is the much anticipated world premier of The Mirror Boy, the latest, and many say one of the very best, in a long line of movies that have been flowing out of the Nigerian film industry for the past few decades.
Written, produced & directed by Obi Emelonye, an award winning UK based Nigerian filmmaker and starring Genevieve Nnaji and Osita Iheme – the biggest screen talents Africa has to offer – The Mirror Boy aims to “captivate global audiences and become the blockbuster that fans of Nigerian cinema have been waiting for”.
It was in 2010 that the world finally became aware of the enormous growth in the fledgling Nigerian film industry, now popularly known as ‘Nollywood’, as it surpassed Hollywood to become the world’s 2nd biggest movie producer. Nollywood already holds the position of being the No. 1 cinema art form across Nigeria, Africa and the global African Diaspora, with many millions of eager fans worldwide.
The Mirror Boy is a universal family adventure film that tells the uplifting story of a young teenage African British boy taken back to the land of his mother’s birth, but then gets mysteriously lost in a foreboding forest and embarks on a magical journey that teaches him about himself and the mystery of the father he has never seen.
Shot in the truly beautiful terrain of the Republic of The Gambia and boasting high quality production values, despite its low (by international standards) budget, The Mirror Boy is said by many in the international movie business to be the Nollywood movie that can finally match it’s industry’s new found status,
The Mirror Boy’s much anticipated success is hoped will elevate and redefine Nollywood and turn international curiosity into a bold statement of cinematic identity, creating a landscape where new Nollywood will ‘crossover’ and become more widely recognised within mainstream channels.
The Mirror Boy was produced by The Nollywood Factory in association with Akin Salami and Patrick Campbell of OH Films, the film arm of OH TV.

BN Bytes: Beyoncé’s Fela Kuti inspired “African Queen” cover for L’Officiel Paris’ 90th Anniversary Issue stirs debate
Posted on Sunday, February 20th, 2011 at 12:43 AMBy SAMMYThe 90th anniversary issue of iconic French luxury and fashion Magazine, L’Officiel Paris features international superstar Beyoncé on the cover.
According to the preview released by L’Officiel,The fashion magazine is about to celebrate its 90th birthday. To celebrate this anniversary, the festivities start with the March issue, with Beyoncé on the cover. The star agreed to pose for an incredible fashion shoot, with the theme of African Queen, paying a tribute to the legendary Fela Kuti (Nigerian political singer who died in 1997). Far from the glamorous Sasha Fierce, the beauty posed for the magazine in amazing fashion designer clothes, but also in a dress created by her mother. A return to her African roots, as you can see on the picture, on which her face was voluntarily darkened. All the pictures will be available in the collector edition, on sale at the end of this month.

While many are looking forward to seeing the complete fashion spread, the preview is already stirring up controversy due to the use of “black face”. Black Face (painting of a person’s face black to depict a black person) has historically negative connotations and is perceived negatively especially in the United States. So what do you think? Was it necessary for Beyoncé’s face to be darkened to depict an African Queen or are people overreacting over the stylist’s creative license?

In addition to the Maltina bottle, the Maltina ‘Can’ will also carry the vibrant new look. The consumers’ ever changing needs and environment requires that a market leader such as Maltina stay contemporary and relevant. To support the new packaging and positioning, there will be full media support. To this end, new TV commercials, radio spots, press and outdoor ads will be unveiled.

BN Bytes: Genevieve Nnaji features in Luna Milk’s “Grow & Shine” TV, Print & Billboard Ad Campaign
Posted on Thursday, February 17th, 2011 at 10:21 AMBy SammyIn late 2010, Genevieve Nnaji flew to Lebanon to film the TV Commercial for Luna Milk. The Nigerian actress is the face of the new Luna Milk “Grow & Shine…Add A Smile to Life” campaign which includes TV Commercials, Print and Billboard advertisements.
In the TV commercial directed by Ziad Barazi, a young girl watches TV and sees Genevieve on screen talking about the health benefits of Luna Milk. The young girl gazes adoringly at Genevieve and then she calls out to her mum to ask what Luna means.
Genevieve then “magically” responds to her directly sharing that Luna means “the moon” and then hands her a can of Luna Milk. She then bids the girl goodbye, calls her “little star” and tells her to “grow and shine”.
It is a cute commercial and definitely another major achievement for Genevieve Nnaji.

BN Hot Topic: It’s the Season of Love!
Posted on Friday, February 11th, 2011 at 11:10 AMBy Glory EdozienI remember in secondary school, ‘Vals Day’, as we called it then, was as important as the once a month ‘Visiting Day’, which we boarders were allowed. It was a day when the boys in school, finally showed their financial and romantic muscle. Weeks before hand, girls would have anticipated who was ‘Valing’ who and with what and the ‘sharp guys’ would have found some flimsy reason to dump any girl they were dating.
On the Day itself, we would wait at the entrance of the girl’s dormitory after evening prep, chanting as various girls arrived with all manners of gifts. Humongous teddy bears, boxes of chocolates, perfumes, cakes, box cards and jewelry. Only God knows how secondary school boys were able to afford such a hefty loot, but we girls didn’t ask, we just took and we got very upset when the boy we were ‘talking’ too failed to deliver.
I remember once, my secondary school boyfriend, Denen and his friend, Sule decided that they wanted to be different. They felt it would be too obvious to give their girlfriends gifts on Valentines Day itself and came up with an ingenious plan to make us wait two whole days before giving us the gifts. I remember fighting the urge to head-but him when he explained his plan to me. I looked him dead in the eye and explained that it was the most stupid plan I had heard in my entire life! How was I going to face all the girls in my dormitory, who would be chanting my name from a mile off, expecting that my so called boyfriend would have ‘declared’ for me. I can still remember their confused faces staring at my empty hands as I walked into my dormitory that night. I spent the next two days stifling gossip that Denen had dumped me and was now seeing another girl from a different school. Thankfully, true to his word, Denen arrived two days later with my special consignment of Valentines Day gifts. His plan finally made sense to me as I unwrapped and ate my box of chocolate.
All around the world, people use this special day to tell and show their loved ones how much they love and appreciate them. Personally, although I love to celebrate Valentines Day, I don’t think appreciating your loved ones shouldn’t be tied down to one day a year only. I remember last year, when I interviewed Banky W, he said he gave his then girlfriend, Valentines Day gifts for 3 days in a row! Did I hear you say Mr romantic toh bad?
But what about the lovely BN reader? Do you have any memorable Valentines Day experience from secondary school or from recent years? Did your significant other propose on February 14th? How did he do it? What plans do you have for this year’s Valentines Day?
It’s the season of love people! Spread the love!

Asa’s “Bamidele”: A Narrative Lyrical Analysis
Posted on Wednesday, February 9th, 2011 at 1:21 PMBy Gbenga AwomoduBamidele is a piano-and-other-strings-driven, jaunty jazz ballad that satirizes a recurrent story of love, lies, betrayal, and family values, from the point of view of an impressionable and naïve young girl; in this case, she could easily be a secondary school girl from the inner city of Ibadan, Oyo State, as Asa deftly infuses the native dialect, mimicking the poor girl. Asa invokes feelings of pain, frustration and regret as she repeats the villain’s name – Akinyele, a native Oyo name. I particularly find the chord progression (7-3-6-2-5-1) at the refrain quite alluring and soul piercing even as she sings on the pentatonic scale. This song, like any other work of art, is subject to a variety of interpretations, so here goes my lyrical analysis:
Bi’nu e ba dun, bi’nu e o ba dun (Whether you are happy, or not)
On’ lati bami dele (You need to follow me home)
Bi o ba fe, bi o ba ko ye (Whether you like it, or you refuse to)
On’ lati bami dele ba’mi (You must follow me to my father’s house)
On’ lati bami dele (You need to follow me home)
Bi o ba fe, bi o ba ko ye (Whether you like it, or you refuse to)
On’ lati bami dele ba’mi (You must follow me to my father’s house)
Akinyele wants to marry wife/ He don’t want to pay some bride price/ You better find it
Akinyele omo Jinadu (Akinyele Jinadu)
He don’t want to pay some bride price/ You better find it
Akinyele o… (x8)
Akinyele omo Jinadu (Akinyele Jinadu)
He don’t want to pay some bride price/ You better find it
Akinyele o… (x8)
So this girl, in her late teens (perhaps, earlier twenties), is wooed tirelessly and strategically by one young lawyer from out of town. She initially refuses, but soon finds herself having strong feelings for this young ‘educated’ man. She is impressed by his diction, his comportment, and even with the fact that he tells her he’s a Law graduate from the University of Ibadan. Out of naivety and inexperience, she soon agrees to his proposition. Some weeks into the ‘secret’ affair, he begins to pester her…
Otutu mu mi/ eyin nro mi o (Cold has taken hold of me/my back aches)
Wa bamidele ba’mi (Come, follow me to my father’s house)
Sebi the same thing lo so fun mi l’ana (Wasn’t it the same thing you told me yesterday?)
Mo tun de/ wa tele mi mo’le (I’m here again/ come, follow me home!)
Wa bamidele ba’mi (Come, follow me to my father’s house)

Lawyer alagidi (Stubborn Lawyer!)

Alakori sanwo k’o to j’obe (Headstrong fellow, pay before you ‘chop’ soup)
Iya mi l’o bi mi, l’o bi mi (My mother gave birth to me)
Baba mi lo to mi (My father trained me)
Mi o ki’n s’omo registry (I’m not for registry wedding)
Alakowe lawyer (learned lawyer)
Akinyele o….. (x8)
First class liar

Baba mi lo to mi (My father trained me)
Mi o ki’n s’omo registry (I’m not for registry wedding)
Alakowe lawyer (learned lawyer)
Akinyele o….. (x8)
Eventually, she gives in to his persistent demands for sex, and she ends up pregnant. Every night, Akinyele’s on her mind as she endures the inconveniences of the pregnancy all alone. She’s probably living with an aunt now or she endures her parents’ vituperations and constant demand for the man responsible for the pregnancy to come claim her and the unborn. She cannot abort because she still has her family values intact. She wants him to put a ring on it! Yes, she already made a grave mistake by going to bed with him, but she still loves him and wants him to make the relationship formal. In the darkness of her room at night, she longs for the strong arms of her man around her; those soothing words to encourage her. She feels cold and her back aches – she’s heavy, but Akinyele has refused to be ‘the man’.
Every day, she goes to his window and knocks at his door, but he repeats the same excuse and empty promises. He tries to shirk his responsibility of arranging for the proper traditional wedding, but attempts to sell her the ‘cheap’ option of a court wedding. She can only but sob into the early morning, hanging to the refrain “Akinyele o!”.
Lawyer, alagidi (Stubborn Lawyer!)
First class liar
Alakori sanwo (Stupid fellow, pay up!)
K’oma mumu, K’oma jeun, K’oma s’omo ol’omo (You indulge in drinking, feeding and flirting)
Akinyele o….. (x8) [x2]
First class liar
Alakori sanwo (Stupid fellow, pay up!)
K’oma mumu, K’oma jeun, K’oma s’omo ol’omo (You indulge in drinking, feeding and flirting)
Akinyele o….. (x8) [x2]
She is now fed up of Akinyele because he seems to be unstable as the sea tides. He continues to prove a very difficult riddle to solve. She still finds no other way to deal with this irony of a man than to call him names and wail his name. Unfortunately, Akinyele increasingly indulges in cheap liquor, gluttony and even begins to flirt with other girls in the neighbourhood. He wouldn’t bulge, so our narrator continues to bite her fingers, tears all over her face.
Then a skittish and gallop-y finale draws the curtain on an altogether very wholesome work. Brilliant work of art!
